I was inspired by the book "Braiding Sweetgrass" when I was creating this painting. Skywoman is the Iroquois mother goddess, who descended to Earth by falling through a hole in the sky. She was a celestial being; geese carried her down to the sea and set her on the back of a turtle, which became her home (Turtle Island.) She brought branches, fruits and seeds of all kinds of plants, she scattered them onto the new ground and carefully tended each one until the world turned from brown to green.
